Axie Infinity, A Blockchain-Based Game

What Is Axie Infinity (AXS)?

Axie Infinity is a blockchain-based trading and battling game that is partially owned and operated by its players.

To learn more about this project, check out our deep dive of Axie Infinity.

Inspired by popular games like Pokémon and Tamagotchi, Axie Infinity allows players to collect, breed, raise, battle and trade token-based creatures known as Axies.

These Axies can take various forms, and there are more than 500 different body parts available, including aquatic, beast, bird, bug, plant and reptile parts. Parts from each type class come in four different rarity scales: common, rare, ultra rare and legendary — and Axies can have any combination of body parts, making them highly variable and often rare and unique.

Each Axie is a non-fungible token (NFT) with different attributes and strengths and can be entered into 3v3 battles, with the winning team earning more experience (exp) points that are used to level up an Axie’s stats or evolve their body parts. These Axies can be bred together to produce new and unique offspring, which can be used or sold on the Axie marketplace.

The Axie Infinity ecosystem also has its own unique governance token, known as Axie Infinity Shards (AXS). These are used to participate in key governance votes and will give holders a say in how funds in the Axie Community Treasury are spent.

How Does Axie Infinity Work?

Axie Infinity’s core gameplay focuses on battling and breeding Axies, the unique creatures at the heart of the Axie Infinity experience.

Axies are defined by a specific set of characteristics, such as class and body parts, used to both differentiate them from other Axies and to determine their level of rarity.

Gameplay

Like other turn based games, Axies are meant to battle and their effectiveness in combat is determined by four statistics:

  • Health determines the amount of damage an Axie can take before being knocked out.
  • Speed determines turn order, with the fastest Axies attacking first.
  • Skill adds damage when an Axie plays multiple ability cards at once in a combination.
  • Morale increases an Axie’s critical strike chance, which determines its ability to knock out an opponent.

Battles

Axie Infinity players face their Axies off against other players in battles of three versus three by using various tactics and strategy to position their Axie on the board. Central to this gameplay is the Axie’s Ability Cards, which determine the attack moves Axies can perform to drain the health of their competitors. Each Ability Card is unique to their respective Axie, as it depends on their individual body configuration and class.

Battling in arena matches and tournaments is the best way to level up Axies and earn Axie Infinity Shards (AXS) and Small Love Potion (SLP). But, players can also take a more adventure-based approach to their experience. By exploring the Axie Infinity world and battling the in-game non-player combatants called Chimera, players earn additional tokens and rare treasures that can be used to progress their characters.

Breeding

Just like their real world counterparts, Axies can create new offspring that have their own unique characteristics and capabilities. Axies can breed up to seven times, with each breeding event requiring more SLP.

After five days of development, new Axie offspring can be used for battle, further breeding with other partners, or put up for sale in the Axie Infinity Marketplace.

Land

Axie Infinity does not limit players to only being able to collect and trade creatures. It also allows players to purchase plots of land that serve as homes for Axies, called Lunacias. Developers will also be able to create unique games within these plots through the Lunacia software development kit.

Players will be able to upgrade the plots over time with the resources and crafted ingredients they find while on in-game adventures.

Axie Infinity describes itself as a “play to earn” game, where players can sell items (including the Axies they breed, in-game real estate, and accessories like flowers or barrels) via the game’s NFT marketplace while also collecting tokens the game generates. There are two special cryptocurrencies used in the game:

  • The main token, Axie Infinity Shards (AXS), can be bought and sold on exchanges like Coinbase. You need some AXS to play the game, but you can also trade AXS like Bitcoin or Dogecoin or any other major crypto. AXS will also serve as a governance token, which allows holders to have a say in the future of the game.
  • A second token, called Small Love Potion (SLP), is awarded to players for spending time in the game. You can win some for beating an opponent’s Axie or for completing in-game quests. The more you play, the more SLP you can rack up. You can buy and sell SLP via DEXs like Uniswap or SushiSwap.

Axie Infinity Marketplace

The best place to find and access Axies that are available for sale is on the Axie Infinity Marketplace. Here, players can view the Axies that have been listed for sale or those sold to other players most recently. Players can also use the filters within the marketplace to narrow in on Axies that match their desired class, body parts, statistics, price and more.

Players can purchase Axies through their Ronin Wallet, the purpose-built cryptocurrency wallet Sky Mavis created for Axie Infinity. Players can fund their wallet with ETH that they can purchase from an exchange like Kraken.

Ronin Sidechain

Axie Infinity has found that their users’ experience can grind to a halt under high network congestion and gas fees on the Ethereum blockchain. In 2020, Sky Mavis announced they will begin developing their Ronin Ethereum sidechain in an effort to alleviate this issue.

What Makes Axie Infinity Unique?

Each Axie possesses six out of the hundreds of different potential body parts — each of which has its own battle move. This produces essentially endless variety among Axies, with most Axies having relatively weak statistics, while those with the strongest combination of body parts can have incredible stats.

Unlike some other blockchain-based battling and breeding games, each Axie can only be bred a total of seven times to help control the population of Axies.

Axie Infinity has its own mating hub to help players find a suitable match to breed their Axie with to stand the best chance at producing a rare or powerful offspring. It costs 0.005 ETH in addition to Small Love Potion (SLP) tokens to breed Axies.

AXS token holders will soon be able to stake their tokens to receive regular rewards. But unlike some other stakeable assets, AXS holders will also need to vote and play to claim their rewards.

How Many Axie Infinity (AXS) Coins Are There in Circulation?

Axie Infinity (AXS) tokens have a total supply of 270 million tokens. Out of this, around 53.5 million tokens were in circulation as of mid-November 2020.

In total, 11% of the total supply was allocated to participants in the Binance Launchpad IEO sale (each Axie Infinity token price was $0.10) and 4% was sold in a private sale. In addition to this, 29% is allocated for staking rewards, 20% to the play-to-earn pool, 21% to the team, 7% to advisors and 8% to the ecosystem fund.

Based on the current release schedule, as indicated by Binance Research, 100% of AXS tokens will be circulating by early 2026.

What Is AXS Token?

AXS stands for Axie Infinity Shard. It is an ERC-20 token built on the Ethereum Blockchain and has a maximum supply of 270,000,000 AXS coins. In fact, AXS was created to be used on Axie Infinity’s platform. Inspired by Pokémon, this Axie Infinity is a fighting game where players can breed and train their Axies to fight against others.

Regarding breeding their Axies, players must consider the characters’ race and ranking to stand the best chance at producing powerful offspring. Also, players can sell their Axies on the NFT marketplace and exchange their islands or any items in this game.

In Axie Infinity, there are two game modes: Adventure Mode in which players need to fight and successfully complete each level, and Arena Mode which features fighting matches and requires at least 3 Axies in the battle.

AXS UseCase

AXS token holders will have a voting right to have a say in the game’s development. Also, they can stake their tokens to receive regular rewards and use AXS coins to pay for any items on the platform: for example, purchasing Axies on the Marketplace. Thus, the sharp increase in AXS tokens depends on the growth of Axie Infinity’s platform.

Axie Infinity Universe

Axie Infinity is a game universe filled with fascinating creatures, Axies, that players can collect as pets. Players aim to battle, breed, collect, raise, and build kingdoms for their Axies. The universe has a player-owned economy where players can truly own, buy, sell, and trade resources they earn in the game through skilled-gameplay and contributions to the ecosystem.
There are and will be many varied games experiences for Axies. Many of them will have players compete with each other using complex strategies and tactics to attain top rankings or be rewarded with coveted resources. Others will have them complete quests, defeat bosses, and unlock in-depth storylines.

There are countless unique Axies that players can collect with varying body parts and appearances. Body parts will unlock abilities for Axies that vary across games, they will have completely different values, benefits, and skills from one game to another. Body parts also have their own unique card art for players to collect.

Community & Economy

All art assets and Axie genetic data can be easily accessed by 3rd parties, allowing community developers to build their own tools and experiences in the Axie Infinity universe. While still in early access, Axie is ranked the #1 Ethereum game by daily, weekly, and monthly active users. Players have spent over 1M ETH (3B+ USD) so far to progress in the game.
While Axie is a fun game, it’s also taken on characteristics of a social network and earning platform due to the strong community and opportunity to truly own resources earned within the games.
A key difference between Axie and a traditional game is that Blockchain economic design unlocks the ability to have complex player-owned economies and reward players who are able to reach advanced levels of skill. Players are able to have fun and work towards ambitious goals while simultaneously earning potential resources that will have real monetary value due to an open economic system and demand from other players – “Play-and-Earn”.
Currently, players can gain more resources to advance in the game by taking actions such as:
  • Competing in Battles to win leaderboard prizes as well as Smooth Love Potions (SLP)
  • Breeding Axies to produce new ones with particular Body Part combinations
  • Collecting and speculating on rare Axies such as Mystics and Origins

7 Things To Know Before You Buy Axie Infinity (AXS)

1. Axie is a play-to-earn cryptocurrency game

Play to earn is a relatively new form of gaming, but the concept is catching on. Players in these games earn cryptocurrency tokens within the game, which they can trade on decentralized exchanges for hard cash.

In Axie Infinity, players own cute creatures called Axies. Each Axie is a non-fungible token (NFT), which means it is a unique digital collectible in its own right. Players can breed and battle Axies, as well as complete quests and farm resources.

There’s a whole economy within the game (a world called Lunacia). Players can use their in-game tokens — Smooth Love Potion (SLP) and Axie Infinity Shard (AXS) — to buy land, farm, or breed Axies in Lunacia. And since the tokens have value, gamers can also use them to pay for rent or food in real life.

2. You need three Axies to take part in the game

As an investor, you’re more likely to buy AXS tokens in the belief they will increase in value long term. However, Axie Infinity is not geared toward investors — it’s a community that encourages token holders to participate.

And participation can get expensive. Especially as one downside of Axie Infinity’s success is that the price of Axies has shot up. Players used to be able to get started with $5 to $10. Right now, the minimum price for an Axie is around $200, so gamers need to spend $600 to play. Axies can breed up to seven times before they go sterile.

You’ll also need two wallets and a chunk of Ethereum (ETH) before you can even buy your first Axie.

3. People are quitting their jobs to play Axie

According to the Cryptoday newsletter on Substack, the average player can earn around 4,500 SLP a month. At today’s prices, that’s around $1,500.

Axie says there are more than 250,000 daily active players. The game is both time consuming and strategic. Not only do players need to carefully breed their Axies to develop particular skills, they also need to complete quests to earn energy that lets them participate further.

As a result, some workers in countries like Vietnam and the Philippines are giving up their day jobs to dedicate themselves to Axie. It has helped many people through pandemic-related economic struggles, though most see it as a side hustle rather than a day job.

4. Axie’s not the only PTE game on the market

If you’re considering buying AXS today, bear in mind that there are other crypto games available that might eclipse today’s craze. What sets Axie apart is that it’s had years to develop the product and build its community. The project originally started in 2017 and it only took off recently, which the team believes will make it harder to imitate.

However, blockchain technology is also developing rapidly, and every successful coin seems to spawn a number of copycats. With any cryptocurrency, there’s always a risk that something better will quickly replace it.

5. The price jumped over 600% in a month — then halved in value

From mid June to mid July, AXS jumped by over 600%. The price hit an all-time high of $29.13 on July 15 before falling to $14.19 on July 20. At the time of writing, AXS is climbing again.

All cryptocurrency prices are volatile, and big price jumps are often driven by investors who see a coin is rising and get scared they’ll miss out. Make sure you do your homework and look at Axie’s long-term potential before you buy.

6. Axie land sale broke records

Back in February, a user spent 888.25 ETH (worth about $1.5 million at that point) on nine plots of land in Axie. CoinDesk said it was the largest NFT sale on record at that point.

Since then, we’ve seen a host of multimillion dollar NFT sales, including Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey’s first tweet, which sold for almost $3 million. This highlights the fact that AXS tokens are not the only way to invest in Axie Infinity — owning Axies and digital land could also be profitable for those willing to immerse themselves in Lunacia.

7. You can’t buy Axie on major U.S. exchanges

Right now, AXS and SLP aren’t available on top U.S. cryptocurrency exchanges, which means they aren’t easy to buy. It is possible to use a decentralized exchange, but be careful, as these are not always open to U.S. investors, and buying from an unregulated exchange increases the risk of fraud.

All in all, Axie could be an interesting one to watch. But it’s a good idea to understand the crypto gaming industry and the play-to-earn concept before spending your hard-earned cash.

CONCLUSION: PROS AND CONS OF AXIE INFINITY

Axie Infinity is a legitimate play-to-earn video game based on NFT and blockchain technology. The current number of players and the record-breaking sales it has generated are good indicators that it has a solid digital ecosystem and economy.

To add to the aforementioned advantages, another strength of this game is that the value of the cryptocurrencies used in-game is based on a fair market price. Future development plans for this game remain promising. As one of the first NFT-based games, it is also a game-changer, and can indeed benefit early adopters.

But people should still exercise caution. Axies NFTs are still prone to overvaluation, as well as hyperinflation. Adding to this is the fact that cryptocurrencies are volatile. Individuals should evaluate their risk appetite when investing real money in the game.

Axie Infinity Price Prediction

It is tough trying to predict the price of any crypto due to the heavy volatility of the markets. Considering AXS Coins’ bullish past, alongside its encouraging real-world utility, it seems that it could be a great long-term investment.

In addition to this, over 76% of Coinbase users vote it a buying opportunity which signals bullish market sentiment for the coin. What’s more, it is over 150% down from its all-time high of £122. This leaves some huge room for future growth. Therefore the current AXS price could be a great entry point for investors.

WalletInvestor says AXS is an “awesome long-term investment”. Its Axie Infinity price prediction for 2022 says it will pass the $100 mark in October. WalletInvestor suggests this price rise will continue and on 31 December 2022, the coin could reach $123.08. The site’s Axie infinity price prediction for 2025 is for the coin to surge to $398.08 by the end of the year. The momentum is expected to continue, and in five years’ time could be worth $505.41.

There is an even more positive AXS coin price prediction from Gov.Capital, which suggests the price will reach $361.82 in one year’s time and climb above $500 in May 2023. The five-year AXS prediction for 2027 is $3,481.97.
